Romanian tourist missing in Annapurna Region found dead


POKHARA

A Romanian tourist, Adina Monica Popescu, 26, who was missing since July 16 in Annapurna Region, has been found dead on a river bank. According to police, the dead body was found in Suikhola River in Ghandruk-1 on Sunday evening. DSP Gajur Siddhi Bajracharya, Spokesperson at Kaski District Police Office, said that the body was identified by Popescu’s relatives.  

“She might have died after being swept away by the river,” Bajracharya said, “Further investigation into the case is underway.” Popescu was trekking along Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) route alone.

ACAP’s employee Yam Gurung told Republica Online that dead body was found some 500 meters downstream from the place for crossing the river. She had entered the Annapurna region after buying permit from ACAP Permit Counter on July 12 and was scheduled to get back to Pokhara on July 17.

Adina had entered Nepal on July 11 and had planned to return to her home in Bucharest, Romania, on July 21. After her parents found out that she was not among the passengers in her return flight of July 21, they had alerted the Nepali authorities.

Trekking in Nepal Himalaya involves many days of walking. To experience the hill country, you should allow yourself at least 2 weeks. Unless you have a month or more at your disposal, you’ll probably manage only one trek during your visit. In any event, you’ll want to spend a few days in Kathmandu and possibly visit Pokhara and a jungle lodge in Chitwan while you are in Nepal. The real trek in Nepal lasts three weeks at least. It is my heartiest opinion. History of Money Excavations in Tilaurkot during the period of 1967-1976, revealed that the earliest coins recorded in Nepal are ‘kushan’, ‘kaniksha’ and ‘havisha’ coins (1st century) and the ‘punch marked’ coins (6th and 5th century B.C.). King Mandeva’s rule in the 5th century gave birth to the Licchavi coins. It was during the Malla period that more systemization was brought in monetary terms. Our money saving tip: Buy an air pressure gauge if you plan on doing any cycling while you are here in Nepal. People tend to get a lot of flat tires and I believe I‘ve discovered the reason. People, even some mechanics, do not have an air pressure gauge so the tire is fine when they fix it, but after the person drives a while the air gets hot and expands. Driving on over inflated tires is not good, especially when the roads are filled with pot-holes and rocks; it’s a flat tire waiting to happen.  My suggestion is to have an air pressure gauge and keep the tires inflated properly. Even if you are taking a motorcycle or scooter it’ a good idea.
