Great Shopping Finds in Kathmandu | Check it out



As most of my readers know, I'm a huge fan of Nepali handicrafts. It's typical of me to wander off from the group and get stuck in a tiny, crowded store with unique products as we walk in many of the districts of Kathmandu.  Brass, copper, semi-precious stones, hard-fired pottery or even handmade musical instruments are just the start. As I walk along I'll see something I'd never seen before, a button store, Tibetan style fabrics, woolen carpet or possibly furniture. Such fine workmanship and at bargain prices.

Last week was no different. Our volunteer guests and Nepali escorts walked along at their own pace while I scouted the stores for unique treasures. This first find is a large teapot made with inlaid turquoise that would look stunning on a mantle or display shelf.

This same store had two other unique pieces. This is the retail outlet for a family-owned manufacturing factory or workshop. These pieces are made by experienced, professional artisans, not slaves in a sweatshop.

I found this piece, a canister with Buddhas and traditional designs intricately integrated into the piece to be breathtaking. It has an antique look about it that would work with a variety of decor.





This copper canister reminded me of the Buddhist prayer wheels in Kathmandu. It is obviously hand-crafted and well-made. This piece is one of their signature pieces, so it can be ordered in sets of any amount. Others of the pieces are one of a kind and would be more difficult to order more. However, being as this is factory direct, I'm confident we will be able to order these pieces. It is important to order an entire set at one time to make sure the copper and designs match. Otherwise, the tone could be a bit different.


If you come to Nepal the shopping can be some of the most amazing days. Do take a day or two just to explore the quality of art in Nepal.

How Long to Trek in Nepal? Nepal Tourism | Best Trek Durations

Trekking in Nepal Himalaya involves many days of walking. To experience the hill country, you should allow yourself at least 2 weeks. Unless you have a month or more at your disposal, you’ll probably manage only one trek during your visit. In any event, you’ll want to spend a few days in Kathmandu and possibly visit Pokhara and a jungle lodge in Chitwan while you are in Nepal. The real trek in Nepal lasts three weeks at least. It is my heartiest opinion. One Week Trek If you have allowed yourself only one week in Nepal, you won’t have time to do any serious trekking, especially if you also want to do some sightseeing in Kathmandu. You could do a short walk on the Kathmandu valley rim, head to Pokhara and do some day hikes, or a three- or four-day trek to Ghorapani (2850 m) or Ghandruk (1940 m). Om Mani Pema Hu Baudha Stupa is one of the most holy places of worship for Buddhists in Nepal. Every year hundreds and thousands of people from all over the world visit this holy place. The History of Money in Nepal | currency notes and coins

History of Money Excavations in Tilaurkot during the period of 1967-1976, revealed that the earliest coins recorded in Nepal are ‘kushan’, ‘kaniksha’ and ‘havisha’ coins (1st century) and the ‘punch marked’ coins (6th and 5th century B.C.). King Mandeva’s rule in the 5th century gave birth to the Licchavi coins. It was during the Malla period that more systemization was brought in monetary terms. Coins were then issued in denominations of 2 mohur (equivalent to one rupee), 1 mohur (50 paisa), one and a half sukka (36 paisa), sukka (25 paisa), sukki, or ‘tinnani’, (12 paisa), anni (6 paisa), adhani (3 paisa), paisa (1 paisa), and dam (1/4 paisa). In 1545, Dolkha King Indrasinga Deva minted the first silver coins with the rupee coin weighing in at 11.6 gm (1 tola). Our money saving tip: Buy an air pressure gauge if you plan on doing any cycling while you are here in Nepal. People tend to get a lot of flat tires and I believe I‘ve discovered the reason. People, even some mechanics, do not have an air pressure gauge so the tire is fine when they fix it, but after the person drives a while the air gets hot and expands. Driving on over inflated tires is not good, especially when the roads are filled with pot-holes and rocks; it’s a flat tire waiting to happen.  My suggestion is to have an air pressure gauge and keep the tires inflated properly. Even if you are taking a motorcycle or scooter it’ a good idea.
